Cuthbertson runs for 161, defense scores twice in Football's 21-14 win over PC

SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College defense scored a pair of touchdowns and senior linebacker Lester Sconyers (New Bern, NC) intercepted Presbyterian at the goal line inside the final minute to help Catawba preserve a 21-14 victory over the Blue Hose in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The Catawba Indians improves to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in the SAC, while the Blue Hose, ranked fifth in the South Region, fall to 6-4 and 4-2.Presbyterian got on the board first, capitalizing on a blocked punt by Darrell Doe (Allendale, SC).  On the first play following the block, Chetyuane Reeder (Clinton, SC) scored on an 18-yard run to give the Blue Hose a 7-0 lead with 3:33 left in the opening quarter.  Catawba tied the game in the second quarter as Reeder fumbled and Jasmon Carpenter (Black Mountain, NC) returned it 40 yards for a score with 12:08 remaining in the half.

The Blue Hose regained the lead late in the opening half on a short one-yard run by S.J. Worrell (Madison, GA) with just 2:08 remaining before the break.  PC was driving again, but Ron Ellington (Charlotte, NC) forced a fumble on a sack and Thomas Presley (Goldsboro, NC) raced 61 yards for the tying score with 30 seconds to go in the first half.

Defenses would dominate the second half.  Catawba got the lone score with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter.  Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC), who rushed for a career-best 161 yards, had a key 51-yard run to set up the score.  Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) would cap the drive on a six-yard pass to Brent Johnson (Hickory, NC).

Presbyterian drove 65 yards to the Catawba three-yard-line, aided by a key 30-yard pass from Grayson Mullins (Columbia, SC) to Terrance Butler (Surfside Beach, SC) on a third-and-eight, inside the final minute.  On third-and-one from the three, Mullis’ pass over the middle was intercepted by Sconyers.  Catawba knelt down and ran out the final 30 seconds on the clock.

Catawba totaled 158 yards on the ground, led by the 161 yards by Cuthbertson.  Roach completed just 7-of-21 passes for 55 yards with four going to Lance Johnson (Hickory, NC) covering 41 yards.  Mullins threw for 108 yards on 13-of-26 passing for Presbyterian with Butler making five catches for 62 yards.  The Blue Hose ran for 123 yards and were led by Worrell’s 67 yards.
