Women's Basketball drops opener vs. USC-Aiken
AUGUSTA, GA -- Catawba came up a little short in its season opener, falling 74-63 to USC-Aiken on Friday night in women’s basketball action at Christenberry Fieldhouse on the campus of Augusta State University. The Lady Pacers improve to 2-0.
Catawba trailed by only two with 3:41 left, but after a jumper by Nichole Bennett, two Catawba turnovers led to five Aiken points and a 70-61 lead with 2:07 remaining. The Lady Pacers hit on 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch. The Lady Indians had reduced a 13-point deficit with 10 minutes to play to just the single basket.
Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) started the rally with a three-point play that was followed by a three-pointer by Gia Colombo (Concord, NH). Foster later had five straight points to trim to lead to 63-59 with Cristi Bartlett (Camden, NC) pulled Catawba within a bucket at 63-61.
Catawba led for a good portion of the opening half and grabbed a 23-16 lead following a three-pointer by Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) at the 8:21 mark. Mindy Allee hit consecutive three-pointers for Aiken and the Lady Pacers grabbed the lead on a layup by Avonte Williams with 2:34 left in the half.
The Lady Indians shot 47% and hit 6-of-12 from three-point range, but saw Aiken can 60%, including 8-of-12 from long range. Aiken also held a 34-20 edge on the boards.
Hampton paced Catawba with 15 points off the bench with Sicilia LoSauro (Oviedo, FL) adding nine points. Colombo dished out nine assists. Bennett and Allee each had 12 points for USC-Aiken.
