Wooldridge posts double-double in Men's Basketball loss to GC&SU
SALISBURY, NC – Georgia College and State University overcame a seven-point halftime deficit and defeated host Catawba 82-74 in men’s basketball action at the Salisbury Roundball Classic on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Bobcats improve to 2-0, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-1.
In the opener, Livingstone (1-2) claimed an 80-66 win over Allen (0-3). Catawba used a hot shooting touch to grab a 30-20 edge after the opening 10 minutes. Freshman Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC) hit consecutive three’s and freshman Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC) added a third in a 13-3 Tribe run for the 30-20 edge. GC&SU rallied back and cut the lead to 34-33 following a four-point play by Shaun Keaton (Albany, GA).
Catawba answered back on a three-point play by Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) and took a 42-35 lead at the break. The Bobcats took control early in the second half, opening with a 19-4 run to grab a 54-46 lead following a Keaton three-pointer with 13:13 to go. Catawba closed the gap to 62-59 on a Wooldridge dunk with 7:21 left, but GC&SU scored six straight points to go on top by nine and Catawba never got closer than five the rest of the way.
Aaron Clark (Suwannee, GA) led the Bobcats with 23 points, while Keaton added 18 points off the bench. Levert Carter (Augusta, GA) added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Shejdie Childs (Philadelphia, PA) tallied 13 points and dished out eight assists.
GC&SU shot 48% in the second half and finished the game at 41%. The Bobcats held a 42-40 edge on the boards and were a +8 in turnover margin. Wooldridge posted a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds to pace Catawba. Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) added 12 points and eight assists.
The Tribe committed 22 turnovers and made just 7-of-16 (44%) at the line.
