Morancie's free throw lifts Women's Basketball to 67-66 winGREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Lynn Morancie's (Houston, TX) free throw with 2.2 seconds left in the second half gave #20 Catawba College a 67-66 victory over the Tusculum College Pioneers Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action at Alpine Arena. Morancie's conversion came after Tusculum senior Kristen New (Russell, Ky.) made a three pointer with 17 seconds left to tie the game. Catawba runs their record to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while Tusculum drops to 5-8 and 0-2. Catawba dominated most of the first half and led by as many as eight points despite losing starting point guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) with an injury in the opening five minutes. Both teams had trouble holding on to the ball and combined for 26 turnovers in the opening frame. After two free throws by freshman Stephanie Valentine (Charlotte, NC) put the Lady Indians up 31-23 with 3:56 to go in the first half, the Pioneers went on a 15-0 run to lead 38-31 at the break. With Catawba inside players Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) and Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) on the bench with foul trouble, Tusculum got 12 points came from its post players, with junior Candice Combs (Clayton, N.C.) contributing eight and junior Whitley Campbell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) three. Combs posted 14 of her season-high 20 points in the first half. Tusculum managed to hold their halftime lead until a steal and layup by senior Ella Pasola (Vantaa, FINLAND) put the Lady Indians up 49-48 with 10:40 to play. Little gave Catawba its largest lead of the second half at 62-54 with 4:22 remaining. Having been held to just four points in the first 36 minutes, New exploded for eight points down the stretch, including two three pointers which eventually tied the game 66-66. However, Morancie's 11th point of the night made the final margin 67-66. Combs and Catawba sophomore Danyel Locklear shared game-high honors with 20 points. Campbell pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds for the Pioneers, helping them win the battle of the boards 48-40. Locklear added 11 rebounds for Catawba to record her fifth double- double of the season and third in a row. Little and Pasola added 12 points each for the Lady Indians. #####
