Petty sizzles in Men's Basketball win at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) scored a career-high 34 points to lead Catawba College to a 71-61 win over Tusculum College Wednesday night at Alpine Arena in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action. Petty shot 11-for-20 from the floor, including 6-for-11 from three-point territory. The Indians (11-2, 2-0 SAC) win their fourth game in a row and five of their last six, while the Pioneers drop to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the league. Petty was a one-man wrecking crew in the first half scoring 25 points as the Indians shot 46 percent from the floor. But the Pioneers shot 52 percent from the field, including junior Britton Boedecker (Missoula, MT) who tallied 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting in the opening 20 minutes as TC led 39-38 at halftime. In the second half, the lead bounced back and forth as TC took a 50-48 lead when Jason Williams (Ripley, TN) canned a three-pointer with 10:48 remaining. The Tribe answered with a 9-0 run as Petty converted a three-point play to give Catawba a 57-50 advantage with 7:17 left. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 57-53 on Jonathon Shepherd’s (Casino, AUSTRAILIA) three-pointer 30 seconds later, but that’s as close as TC would get as Catawba would seal their first ever victory in Greeneville. Petty’s point tally is the most ever scored in Alpine Arena, breaking the mark previously held by Tusculum’s Shane Banks who scored 32 points against West Virginia Tech in 1998. Catawba’s Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA), the league’s top scorer, was held to eight points and six rebounds, while Terrance Hamilton (Dillon, SC) posted nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Boedecker finished with 12 points for the Pioneers while senior Benji Hawk (Greeneville, TN) added 11 points off the bench, including three 3-pointers. Kiroh Peterkin (Toronto, ONT, CANADA) added six points and seven rebounds, while Alberto Tejera (Bayamon, PUERTO RICO) dished out five assists. ######
