Women's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight, Defeating Queens 69-50
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba held Queens scoreless for nearly 10 minutes during one span of the first half and defeated the visiting Royals 69-50 in women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians win their fifth straight and improve to 5-1, while the Royals fall to 0-4.
Queens grabbed a 6-4 lead at the 16:17 mark of the opening half on a layup by Jacquia Winstead (Elm City, NC), but then failed to score again until a free throw by Kayla Babson (Harrisburg, NC) with 6:56 to go before the break which ended a 13-point run by Catawba. A Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) jumper with 14:34 remaining put Catawba on top for good at 8-6.
Catawba, which led by as many as 16 points in the opening half, held a 29-15 edge at the break. Queens committed 22 of its 33 turnovers in the opening half and shot just 17% (4-of-23). Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) scored all nine of her points in the first half and also added four steals.
The Tribe pushed the pace in the second half and held its largest margin of 29 points at 61-32 with 6:50 remaining. Foster was joined by Sicilia LoSauro (Oviedo, FL) and Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD) as high scorers with nine points. Gia Colombo (Concord, NH) had eight points and four assists.
Phylicia Turner (Greensboro, NC) was the only player to reach double figures as she scored a dozen points for the Royals. Ciera Brown (Sanford, NC) had nine points and six rebounds, while Ashley Watkins (Salisbury, NC) added eight points.
