Women's Basketball blitzed by Mars HillMARS HILL, NC — Mars Hill College defeated visiting Catawba, who entered ranked 20th in NCAA II, 78-51 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The Lady Lions improved to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, extending their winning streak to six games behind Denise Shelton (Cambridge, IN) who recorded her fifth double-double on the year. Catawba falls to 11-3 and 2-1. Shelton was a single assist shy of recording a triple-double. Shelton supplied the team with a game-high 20 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Mars Hill opened the game on an 11-to-3 run and led 20-5 with six minutes left in the opening half. Catawba would cut the deficit to 20-9, but would not reach double digits until there was only 1:54 to go before the break. Mars Hill led by 24 points (34-10) at halftime. Catawba, playing without injured point guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA), shot only 21.1% (4-19) from the field and hit just 2-of-9 from the line in the first half of play. After falling down by 28 in the second half, Catawba clawed to within 15 with just under nine minutes to play, but Mars Hill answered with 17-3 run to ice the issue. Following Shelton for Mars Hill was Maria Hickman (Statesville, NC) and Tiffany Atkins (Barnardsville, NC), who scored 16 and 13 points in the game, respectively. Mars Hill shot 59.3% from the floor in the second half, while Catawba improved to 57.7%, but still struggled at the line, making only 10-of-30 for the game.
