Petty retains hot hand in Men's Basketball win at Mars Hill
Catawba College's Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) continued his scoring outburst, netting 28 points to lead the Indians past Mars Hill 96-70 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday afternoon at Stanford Arena. Catawba improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC with its fifth straight win. Mars Hill falls to 2-9 and 1-2. Petty scored 18 of his 28 points in the first half, following up a career-high 34 point performance on Wednesday. The junior was 7-of-9 from the field, 5-of-6 from 3-point range, and a perfect 9-of-9 from the foul line. Petty also provided his team with 10 assists in the win.
Catawba opened the game on a 10-3 run and never looked back. The Indians held a 17-point (45-28) advantage at halftime. Catawba hit 51.4% from the floor in the first half. The Indians opened the last half of play on a 7-4 run to lead by 52-32 at the 17:47 mark after Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) hit a layup. Catawba led by as many as 31 points (95-64) with 1:15 remaining in regulation after Britt Jernigan (Albemarle, NC) hit a jumper.
Following Petty for Catawba was Carter with 15 and Terrence Hamilton (Dillon, SC), with 13. Hamilton moved within five points of the 1,000 plateau for his career. Sophomore Reggie Proctor (Hampton, VA) came off the bench to add 12 points. Carter and Hamilton pulled down nine and eight rebounds in the game, respectively. Quentin Bryant (Badin, NC) recorded a career-high 10 rebounds.
John Lewis (Sylva, NC) came off the bench to lead Mars Hill with 15 points followed by Jerome Ramsey (Connelly Springs, NC) with 14. Quincy Hinton (Birmingham, AL) and David Cope (Brevard, NC) score nine apiece. Chris Starkes (Erlensee, Germany) pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss.
