Women's Basketball wins battle of IndiansNEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba College held off a feisty Newberry squad to take a 73-62 victory in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action at Eleazer Gym on Saturday afternoon. Catawba improves to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 2-14 and 0-5.Catawba opened strong, hitting four of its first five shots and holding Newberry without a field goal attempts in the opening two minutes to lead 8-0. Catawba led 12-2 after six minutes before Newberry hit its initial field goal at the 13:42 mark. Newberry trailed 18-8 after nine minutes, but made a 13-2 run to take a 21-20 edge on a bucket by Carlie Smith with six minutes left in the half. Ella Pasola (Vantaa, FINLAND) made three-pointers on consecutive trips in the final minute to give Catawba a 35-33 edge at the break. Catawba stormed out to a 48-35 lead in the opening six minutes of the second half, but Newberry fought back behind consecutive three-pointers by Smith and Shirloyn Johnson and led 51-50 following a Tasha Farmer bucket at the 9:17 mark. Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) hit two free throws with 8:54 left to give Catawba the lead for good at 52-51, then scored with 5:49 remaining for a 56-51 advantage. Catawba would build on its lead, hitting 9-of-11 free throws in the final four minutes. Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) led the way for Catawba with 19 points and 15 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year. Locklear and Pasola each added 14 points, while freshman Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) added 12 points off the bench. Newberry was led by Smith, who had 15 points, and by Jen Wix, who had 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Johnson added 12 points for Newberry. Catawba shot 46% for the game, while holding Newberry to 32% and just 27% in the second half. #####
