Men's Basketball holds off Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba College hit seven first half three-pointers and held Newberry to 31% shooting in the second half and defeated Newberry 84-70 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Gym. It marks the seventh straight win for Catawba, who improves to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 2-14 and 0-5.Newberry had the hot hand early, leading 22-17 midway through the half. Catawba then heated up, nailing five three-pointers, three by Britt Jernigan (Albemarle, NC), to take a 32-28 edge with just over six minutes in the half. Jernigan added his fourth three of the half to push the margin to 39-30 with 4:33 remaining.
Catawba led 42-36 at the break and led 49-39 after a three-point play by Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) with 16:10 to go. Trailing by ten, Zeb Reid hit consecutive three-pointers to give Newberry its eighth straigh point to trim the deficit to 61-57 at the 9:24 mark. Catawba ended the run as Newberry was slow coming to the court after a media time out and Carter recorded an uncontested dunk.
Newberry trailed only 70-65 with five minutes left, but Catawba got two free throws and a layup by Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC), followed by a pair of free throws by Alex Luyk (Madrid, SPAIN) to grab a 76-65 edge f-6 free throws in the final two minutes to stay in front.
Petty led Catawba, scoring 24 points with seven rebounds and seven assists. Carter added 16 points, while Jernigan knocked down a career-high 13 points. Jernigan hit on all four of his three-point attempts in the first half. Alex Fair led Newberry with 24 points, while Theron Chandler had 12 points and 16 rebounds.
