Women's Basketball has 18-game home win streak snapped

SALISBURY, NC -- Presbyterian College snapped an eight-year drought at Goodman Gym with a 77-71 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night. The loss snapped Catawba’s 18-game home court win streak. Presbyterian improves to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the SAC with its first win in Salisbury, NC, since Jan.6 , 1993. Catawba falls to 13-4 and 4-2.Presbyterian never trailed and the game was tied only twice at 2-2 and 4-4 in the opening minutes. Catawba committed five turnovers in its first seven possessions and had 27 on the night. Presbyterian was also generous, giving the ball back on 24 occasions. The Lady Blue Hose led by as many as eight points in the opening half and though Catawba would continue to trim the deficit to a single bucket, the Lady Indians could not tie the contest. Catawba trailed by two in the last 30 seconds of the opening half, but a pair of free throws by Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, GA), then a three-pointer by Noel Livernois (Greenwood, SC) with a second left gave Presbyterian a 38-31 edge at the break. Presbyterian would increase its lead to double digits in the second half and led by 11 with three minutes to play when Catawba made a run. A layin by Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) with 2:35 left and a three-pointer by Ella Pasola (Vantaa, FINLAND) trimmed the deficit to 72-66 with 2:02 to play. Pasola would add a pair of free throws and Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) added one to cut the lead to 72-69 at the 1:16 mark. Catawba cut the lead to one after Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) scored after a pair of missed free throws by Lynn Morancie (Houston, TX) with 38 seconds left. Werner made two free throws for Presbyterian with 36 seconds and after the teams exchanged turnovers Pasola misfired on a three-pointer with 20 seconds to play. Presbyterian hit three of four free throws from there for the final margin. Toni Leopard (Ninety-Six, SC) led Presbyterian with 17 points, while Ja’net Vicks (Greenville, SC) added 14. Billie Haskins (Greensboro, GA) added 13 points, while Werner had 10 points and eight assists. Little posted her third straight double-double for Catawba, scoring 23 points and adding 15 rebounds.
