Women's Basketball moves into second place with win over C-NSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College got double-doubles from Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) and Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) to moved back into a tie for second place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 70-63 victory over visiting Carson-Newman in women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman falls to 9-8 and 5-2.After a squandering an 8-0 start, Catawba would trail by as many as nine point in the opening half. The Lady Eagles used a 13-0 run to take a 25-16 edge at the 8:24 mark of the half after a three-pointer and layin by Kara Caldwell (Treadway, TN). Catawba would eventually fight back to take a lead on Ella Pasola’s (Vantaa, FINLAND) three-pointer at 30-29 with 2:20 remaining before the break. Carson-Newman would lead 36-32 at the half. Carson-Newman would lead by seven in the early stages of the last half at 43-36 on a jumper by Cindy Crabtree (Jamestown, TN). The Lady Indians tied the game at 45-45 on a drive by Kendall Prescott (Exeter, NH) at the 9:56 mark and the teams five times with two ties over the next five and a half minutes. Freshman Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) put Catawba ahead to stay on a layin with 4:15 to play at 58-57. After a steal by Little, Locklear increased the margin to 60-57 at the 3:19 mark. Crabtree would answer for Carson-Newman with 2:52 left, but Locklear recorded a blocked shot, then a steal on the Lady Eagles next possession to kept Catawba on top. Locklear upped the lead back to three with 1:37 left, then recorded another steal seconds later, leading to a Little layin and a 64-59 lead with 1:32 left. Locklear finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Little added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Darden reached double figures for the fourth straight game with 10. For Carson-Newman, Crabtree led all scorers with 16 points off the bench. Monica Ashburn (Deerlodge, TN) added 15. Catawba shot 55% in the second half and held Carson-Newman to just 37%. The Lady Indians also held a 39-32 edge on the boards, including 16 off the offensive glass. #####
