Women's Basketball done in by free throws in loss at L-RHICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne used a huge advantage from the free throw line to defeat visiting Catawba 97-80 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday night at Shuford Gym. Lenoir-Rhyne pulls into a tie with the Lady Indians for third place in the league, improving to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 15-4 and 5-3. Catawba opened strong, holding the Bears without a field goal over the first four minutes in racing to a 14-1 advantage. Back-to-back three pointers by Shae Blacknell started a Lenoir-Rhyne that would lead to a 25-25 tie with six minutes in the half. Lenoir-Rhyne would move out to a 35-30 lead, but Catawba sent the game to half deadlocked at 44-44 on Danielle Scearce's (Salisbury, NC) layin at the buzzer. The second half belonged to Lenoir-Rhyne as the Bears would go ahead by 10 in the opening four minutes of the second half. The Bears kept their distance for most of the half as Catawba could get as close as six at 73-67 with 6:35 to play. The Bears converted only 26 field goals, but made 38 of 49 from the free throw line compared to just 9-of-10 for the Lady Indians. Point guard Maya Grady did not make a field goal, but scored 16 points, making 16-of-22 at the line. Amber Hanks and Tracy Naidas shared high honors for Lenoir-Rhyne as each scored 18 points and had eight rebounds. Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) and Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) each recorded double-doubles for Catawba. Little had 15 points and 12 boards for her fifth straight double-double and 10th of the season. Locklear reached the mark for the sixth time this season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) led Catawba with a career-high 16 points. #####
