Baxter and Howard Lead Women's Basketball to Win at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Andrell Baxter (Evergreen, AL) scored two key baskets and Ne'Keithia Howard (Macon, GA) fired in a career-high 24 points to lift Catawba to an 82-72 win over host Pfeiffer in women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Merner Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 7-1 with a seventh straight win, while the Falcons taste defeat for the first time and fall to 6-1.
Catawba had squandered an eight-point second half lead and Pfeiffer held a 64-63 lead following a three-pointer by Tamara Clay (Willow Springs, NC) with 6:41 to go. Baxter would put the Lady Indians back on top with 5:52 left on a three-pointer then added a three-point play at the 5:25 mark off a steal from Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) to push the lead to 69-64.
Pfeiffer trailed 72-68 with 4:23 left, but baskets by Corin Muldrow (Jacksonville, FL), Baxter and Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD) pushed the Tribe lead to 78-68 with 2:46 remaining.
Howard scored her 24 points by canning 9-of-10 field goals and hitting 6-of-7 at the line. She added six rebounds and four assists. She had 16 points in the second half. Foster gave Catawba the lift in the first half, scoring 13 of her 17 points in the opening frame. She added eight rebounds and three assists.
Muldrow had 10 points, while Baxter and Cameron Clark (Albemarle, NC) had eight points. Gia Colombo (Concord, NH) dished out seven assists. The Lady Indians held a 49-32 edge on the boards to help offset 29 turnovers. Catawba also hit on 51% from the field and held Pfeiffer to just 37%. Raven Truslow (Charlottesville, VA) posted a double-double for the Falcons with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
The game featured a dozen lead changes and eight ties. Pfeiffer jumped to a quick 12-4 lead and held the edge until the closing minutes of the first half. Catawba held a 37-33 advantage at the break.
