Wooldridge Tallies 19 as Men's Basketball Top Montreat
Team Ends Four-game Losing Streak
SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) scored 19 points to lead host Catawba past Montreat 93-87 in men’s basketball action on Thursday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 2-4. The Cavaliers fall to 5-7.
The teams battled through a tight first half that saw eight ties and six lead changes. Montreat held the largest lead of the opening half at 40-35 following a jumper by Jazz Cathcart (Gastonia, NC) with 2:02 remaining, but Catawba scored the final eight points of the half. The Tribe took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC) with 29 seconds left and Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) recorded a steal and layin just before the halftime buzzer for a 43-40 edge at the break.
Houston scored on a three-point play to open the second half and Wooldridge added nine points in the opening six minutes of the half to push the lead to 63-48. Freshman Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC) hit consecutive three-pointers to extend the margin to 74-57 with 11:36 left and a putback by Montrell Brinkley (Rocky Mount, NC) raised the lead to 81-61 at the 8:06 mark.
Catawba led 91-71 with 3:46, but managed only two free throws by Jamie Butler (Galax, VA) the rest of the way. Patrick Hanlon (Marion, NC) came off the bench late and hit a trio of three-pointers for Montreat to get the Cavaliers close at the end.
Wooldridge also led Catawba with seven rebounds, while Graves had 14 points and eight assists. Houston added a dozen points and Fields scored 10. The Indians shot 57% from the field for the game and used a 24-2 edge in fast-break points. Montreat was led by Noble Anthony (Charlotte, NC), who had 22 points and eight rebounds. Tim Lewis (Greenville, NC) added 13 points and eight boards. The Cavaliers held a 42-30 edge on the boards.
