Men's Basketball Falls 78-61 at Lander
Tribe shoots just 33% in first road game
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba men’s basketball team came up a little short in its first road game of the season, falling to host Lander 78-61 on Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena. The loss drops the Catawba Indians to 2-5, while the Bearcats even their record at 4-4.
Lander never trailed in the contest and used a 15-2 run midway through the opening half to take command. After Isaac Rose (Jonesville, NC) tied the contest at 12-12 with 10:45 left, Darius Johnson connected on a three-pointer and followed with two free throws for a 17-12 edge. Dane Sparrow added a three-pointer with Michael Griffith hitting consecutive baskets to extend the lead to 25-14 at the 7:57mark.
Catawba never got closer than eight the rest of the way. Lander led by double-digit for nearly the entire second half. Jason Diggs (Christiansburg, VA) pulled the Tribe within 67-57 with 3:07, but Catawba could get no closer.
Freshman Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC) scored 15 points to lead Catawba, while Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) also reached double figures. Jarred Jackson led all scorers with 24 points, including a sparking 12-of-13 performance at the line. The Bearcats canned 21-of-22 from the charity stripe on the afternoon. Griffith followed with 17 points as Lander held Catawba to just 33% shooting on the night.
