Strong Second Half Lifts Men's Basketball to Win Over Lander
SALISBURY, NC -- Brian Graves scored a game-high 15 points and Jason Diggs added 12 to lead the Catawba 66-54 victory over visiting Lander in men’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gymnasium. Catawba improves to 3-6 overall, while Lander drops to 5-5.
Emanuel Hodrea was the lone Bearcat to score in double figues as he netted 10 points and grabbed three rebounds. Jason Davis added nine points, while Michael Griffin and Curtis Milner had eight each.
Lander led for much of the first half, shooting 47% and committing just four turnovers. The biggest lead in the first half for the Bearcats came at the 1:25 mark when Dane Sparrow made a field goal to give Lander a 34-27 advantage.
Catawba cut the lead to 34-32 on a Graves field goal but Brenton Harris scored with two seconds left in the half for Lander to give the Bearcats a 36-32 lead at the break.
The Tribe used a strong defensive performance in the final half to rally for the win. Lander would make just six field goals, hitting on just 23% from the field, in the second stanza and had seven turnovers.
The Indians took the lead back for the first time since the opening minutes at 40-39 on a field goal by Rob Fields at the 14:27 mark. Graves extended the lead to 57-51 on a basket with 5:05 left and the Bearcats were held scoreless until 1:56 (64-51) when Scottie Smith made the first of two free throw attempts.
Catawba would shoot 47% for the game to just 37% for Lander and held a 38-34 edge on the boards. The Tribe committed 12 turnovers, but blocked nine shots in the game.
