Women's Basketball Cap Pre-Christmas Schedule With Win Over BYU-Hawaii
HONOLULU, HI -- Catawba connected on 56% from the field and placed three players in double figures and defeated BYU-Hawaii 76-61 in women’s basketball action at the Hoop N' Surf Classic on Wednesday morning at Kilauea District Park Gym. Catawba improves to 9-2 with the win, while the Seasiders fall to 2-8.
The Lady Indians got off to a quick 4-0 start, but BYU-Hawaii got two baskets to tie the score then a three-pointer by Kayla Burningham that put the Seasiders up 7-4 at the 18:52 mark. Catawba tied the game at 7-7 on a free throw and jumper by Corin Muldrow and regained the lead on a basket by Ne’Keithia Howard.
Leading 13-12, Hillary Hampton scored seven straight points, including a three-pointer to push the Catawba lead to 20-12 at the 12:12 mark. Catawba held a comfortable margin from that point and took its biggest lead of the half at 37-22 on a Cameron Clark jumper in the final minute.
Catawba would continue to increase its advantage early in the final half. Hampton put the ladies up 54-31 on a three-pointer with just over 12 minutes to play and Erica Tackett gave Catawba its largest lead of the day at 58:33 with 11:06 remaining.
Howard led Catawba with 14 points, on 6-of-7 shooting, while Brittany Higgins canned 6-of-8 shots for 12 points. Hampton rounded out the double-digit performers with 10 points. Latoya Wily paced the Seasiders with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Burningham added 18 points.
