Tennis Secures Five Commitments for 07-08; Men Add Two Players for Spring Season
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College tennis coach, Jeff Childress, has announced a pair of additions to the men’s team for the Spring season, while receiving two early commitments for the 2007-08 year. Childress also received early commitments from three players for the women’s team.
Joining the Tribe for this season on the men’s side will be Fernando Auguiar and Hector Bousoulas. Auguiar is from Rio de Janiero, Brazil, while Bousoulas hails from Athens, Greece.
During the early signing period the Catawba women's tennis team received commitments from Kasia Zielinski, of Erie, PA, Kendra Joyner of Rock Springs, WY, and Hope Bennett, of Spencer, NC. The men's team received commitments from Dana Pallesen, of Alberta, Canada, and Bryce Cockerham, of Augusta, GA.
The Catawba men's and women's tennis teams will begin practice on January 18th and play their first match on February 3rd. The women's tennis ended their fall season at 3-3. The men's team finished with a 5-1 record.
The men's team is led by #1 singles player Jose Velazquez (Dominican Republic). Velazquez has been the #1 singles player and #1 doubles for the past three years. He has been first team All-South Atlantic Conference the past two years. The women's team will be led by #1 player Lauren Fluegge (Avondale, AZ). Fluegge has played #1 singles and #1 doubles for the past two seasons and will be graduating a year early in May.
Both the Catawba men's and women's teams had a very successful past two years with the men's team winning 34 matches and the women's team winning 33 matches over that span. With the new and returning players both teams should have very strong 2007 spring seasons.
