WINGATE, NC -- Wingate University held off a late Catawba rally as the host Bulldogs picked up a 75-69 victory in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Monday night at Cuddy Arena. The 20th-ranked Bulldogs improve to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 11-3 and 1-1.

Wingate built its 13-point halftime edge to 16 with 11 minutes remaining, but Catawba rallied back to within three in the fading minutes. A 9-3 run midway through the second half, which was capped on a three-pointer by Kate Edwards (Charlotte, NC), gave Wingate a 62-46 lead. The Bulldogs still held a nine point lead at 70-61 with just over three minutes left when Catawba began to trim the deficit.

Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) hit a pair of free throws and Ne'Keithia Howard (Macon GA) followed with a steal and layup to cut the margin to 70-65 with 3:13 remaining. The teams traded free throws from that point as Andrell Baxter (Evergreen, AL) and Howard twice got Catawba to within three points.

Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, NC) answered Baxter with two free throws for a 72-67 edge with 1:45 left and hit one of two following Howard for a 73-69 lead with 1:10 remaining. Catawba had a turnover and a missed three-point shot on its next two possessions before Barrett iced the issue on a pair from the line with 15 seconds to play.

Barrett tallied a game-high 23 points to lead the Bulldogs. She hit on 8-of-13 from the field and made 7-of-10 shots at the line. Emily Paffrath (Bakersville, NC) added 14 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. Howard led the Catawba Indians with 19 points, canning 8-of13 shots and 3-of-4 free throws. Foster posted 15 points and nine rebounds.
