Men's Basketball Comes Up Short at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba could not outscore host Newberry and fell 83-77 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Eleazer Gym. Newberry improves to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 9-9 and 4-3.
Catawba jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead, but a pair of three-pointers by Newberry got the hosts within a point at 11-10 with 15:32 to go in the half. Clemente Martin gave Newberry its first lead at 21-19 on his basket with 13:23 remaining. Newberry would not trail after that.
The game was tied five times after that before the break, but Newberry used a 7-1 run to end the half and take a 50-44 lead. Newberry pushed its lead to 10 at 64-54 with 11:38 left before Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) got Catawba close on three straight baskets for the Tribe, including two three-pointers, to bring the Indians within 70-67 with 7:41 remaining.
Newberry had spurted back out by eight with six minutes left when Ahmad Murphy (Orangeburg, SC) and Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) helped trim the deficit to 79-77 with 1:28 to go. Catawba turned the ball over with 38 seconds to play and Alonzo Hinds made two free throws for an 81-77 Newberry edge. The Tribe misfired on a shot and Hinds added two more from the stripe with four seconds left.
Wooldridge posted 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Catawba. Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC) added 18 points and hit five three-pointers. Murphy followed with 16 points with Graves adding 15 points, five assists and four steals.
Martin and Hinds each had 17 points for Newberry. Zach Chandler collected 14 points with Matt Alexander chipping in with 11 points. Hinds added eight assists, while Terrance Spillers pulled down 13 rebounds.
Catawba shot 44% in the contest, while Newberry canned 48.5%. Each team made seven three-pointers, but Newberry held a 43-38 edge on the boards and committed four less turnovers.
