Three Score 20+ As Men's Basketball Rolls Past Carson-Newman 97-81
Team blocks school-record 13 shots
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba placed five players in double figures, including three with 20+ as the Indians defeated visiting Carson-Newman 97-81 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians also set a school record with 13 blocked shots as they improve 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the SAC. The Eagles fall to 7-12 and 0-8.
Freshman Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC) led the Catawba attack with 23 points with 14 coming in the opening half the Indians built a 47-28 advantage. Seniors Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) and Ahmad Murphy (Orangeburg, SC) each had 21 points which marked a career-high for Murphy. Graves posted a double-double, equaling a career-high with 11 assists, while Murphy picked up five steals.
Scott Williams (Mason, GA) put the Eagles up 2-0, but a dunk by Murphy and a jumper by Montrell Brinkley (Rocky Mount, NC) put the Tribe up for good just over a minute into the contest. A three-pointer by Houston and a jumper by Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) extended the lead to 16-6 at the 15:24 mark.
Catawba went on to lead by 21 in the opening half at 47-26 after a jumper by Murphy with just over a minute left. Darren Williams (Lawrenceville, GA) brought the Eagles within 56-43 on a three-pointer with 15:39 remaining, but Catawba would answer and jump ahead 65-45 with 13 minute to play.
Carson-Newman wouldn’t die and reduced the deficit to 11 points at 78-67 on a layup by Jordan Dixon (Clinton, TN) with 5:59 to go. Murphy followed with a three-point play and help push the lead back to 20 at 95-75 with 1:40 left.
Wooldridge, with 11 points, and Norman Monroe (Newport News, VA), with 10 points, also reached double figures for Catawba. Wooldridge and Brinkley each blocked three shots as the Tribe eclipsed the old mark of 12 blocks which was accomplished three previous times.
Kente Hart (Evansville, IN) led Carson-Newman with 19 points and added eight assists. Deonte Williams (Selma, AL) posted a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Scott Williams finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Andy Tipton (Maryville, TN) had 11 points off the bench.
Catawba shot 53% in the win, hitting on 35-of-66 shots. The Tribe also held a 52-39 edge on the boards. The Eagles made 40% from the field, making 33-of-83 tries.
