Evans' Six RBI Day Helps Baseball to Win Over Newberry
KANNAPOLIS, NC -- Senior Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) had three hits and delivered six RBI as 28th-ranked Catawba defeated Newberry 20-9 in baseball action at the South Atlantic Conference Pre-Season Clash on Sunday afternoon at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-1, while Newberry falls to 0-3.
Catawba jumped on Newberry with six runs in the opening inning. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) drew a leadoff walk and Matt Kepley Greensboro, NC) reached on a field choice. Following an out, Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC), Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) and Evans each delivered RBI hits. Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC) had a two-run double in the frame.
Newberry would benefit from a couple of Catawba errors to get back in the game. The Indians would get three runs in the fourth, but Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) answered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning for Catawba. Newberry got three more in the fifth to close within 10-6.
Catawba would put the game out of reach in the seventh with another six-run inning. Evans capped the scoring with a three-run homer in the eighth.
Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) earned the win for Catawba. He allowed five hits over five innings of work with four strikeouts. He surrendered six runs with only three earned. Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, FL) and Scott Horvath (Apopka, FL) each had two hits and a RBI for Newberry.
