Query Goes 4-for-5 as Baseball Defeats Barton 13-2
Lyerly and Sommer connect on first homers
SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore catcher Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) enjoyed a 4-for-5 day with three RBI as host Catawba defeated Barton 13-2 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 4-1, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-2.
After a two-out error in the Tribe first, Catawba would plate the game’s first run on a bases-loaded walk to Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC). Barton grabbed a brief lead in its second. Matt Byrd (Kenley, NC) led off with a single and Kevin Brosseau (Winooski, VT) followed with a double. They would score on RBI groundouts by Jimmy Metzinger (Louisburg, NC) and Robbie Byrd (Timberlake, NC).
Catawba got the lead right back in its own second. Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC) and David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) helped load the bases with no outs with bunt singles, but it took Query, who delivered a two-out, two-run single, to get the lead back.
The Indians would explode for five runs in the third to pull away, benefiting from a pair of Bulldog errors. Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) had a two-run single, while Query had a RBI double. Craig Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) padded the lead with a three-run homer in the fourth for an 11-2 lead.
That was more than enough support for Catawba’s pitchers. Six hurlers combined to hold the Bulldogs to just six hits with eight strikeouts. Freshman Lee Dupre (Salisbury, NC) picked up the win, tossing his four pre-determined innings and allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Brian Sommer (New Port Richey, FL) was the only other Catawba batter to enjoy a multi-hit afternoon with a pair of hits. He capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the eighth. Lyerly finished with four RBI. Trey Bailey (Garner, NC) had two hits for Barton.
