Softball Opens With Doubleheader Sweep of Queens

Ettinger tosses 2-hit shutout, Marshall delivers two key hits

SALISBURY, NC – Catawba opened its 2007 softball season with a sweep of visiting Queens on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 3-0 and 7-1.  The Royals fall to 0-4 on the year.  Senior Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed a two-hit shutout for Catawba in the opener, while freshman Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) had key hits in each game.

Ettinger was perfect over the first five innings before allowing a leadoff single to Samantha King (Citrus Springs, FL).  The Lady Indians scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning.  Marshall delivered the key blow when she laced a two-run triple with one out in the frame to break the scoreless tie.  Marshall scored as she beat the throw home on Brittany Thornburg’s (Kings Mountain, NC) grounder to second.

Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC), who led off the sixth with a single, collected two of Catawba’s four hits.  Ettinger allowed just two singles and struck out four in tossing the shutout.  Lauren Berst (Mooresville, NC) was the tough-luck loser.  She gave up three runs on just the four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

MaryLee Giurintano (Greensboro, NC) gave Queens an early lead in the second game with a two-out RBI double.  Catawba would come right back in its first to score three times.  After a sacrifice fly by Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC), Marshall connected on a two-run homer for a 3-1 lead.

Catawba added two more runs in the second on a bases-loaded walk to Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) and a RBI groundball by White.  Freshman Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA) picked up the win on the mound.  She tossed the complete game, scattering seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.  Whitesides delivered another multi-hit game with a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.  King had two hits for Queens.
