Women's Basketball Wins Despite Scoring Just 44 Points
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba was held to its lowest point total of the season, but scored enough to knock off visiting Newberry 44-41 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 17-6 overall and 7-4 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 19-4 and 8-4.
After an early 5-2 lead, Catawba trailed for much of the contest until finally retaking the lead on a pair of free throws by Andrell Baxter (Evergreen, AL) at 32-31 with 6:47 remaining. The game was tied four times over the next two minutes with Ashlee Wright (Myrtle Beach, SC) drawing Newberry even for the final time at 36-36 with 5:03 to go.
Catawba took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Brittany Higgins (Tacoma Park, MD) with 4:52 remaining. She added another from the stripe with 4:14 left for a 39-36 lead. Wright and Angela Smith (Morrow, GA) each had free throws on the next two Newberry possessions to pull the visitors within 39-38 with 2:54 left.
Corin Muldrow (Jacksonville, NC) made a layup to give Catawba a 41-38 lead with 45 seconds remaining and after a turnover, Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) hit a free throw for a 42-38 edge with 18 ticks left. Cicely Jenkins (Columbia, SC) connected on a three-pointer with six seconds to go, but Muldrow made two free throws with three seconds left and Ashley Marine’s (Peachtree City, GA) 25-footer at the buzzer was short.
Catawba was led by Muldrow, who was the only player to reach double figures with 10 points. Hampton and Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) each had eight points. Marine and Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, SC) had eight points for Newberry with Frasier adding a dozen rebounds.
Neither team shot effectively. Catawba made just 27% (10-of-37), while Newberry hit on just under 33% (15-of-46). Newberry held a 40-28 edge on the boards, but had 18 turnovers to 13 for Catawba. Newberry held a 21-18 lead at the half and kept the lead for six minutes after the break without scoring a point.
