Softball Fights Back For Split in Doubleheader at Francis Marion
FLORENCE, SC – Catawba and host Francis Marion split a softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the FMU Softball Field. The Patriots rallied to take the opener 4-3 in nine innings, while Catawba won game two 6-5. The Catawba Indians are now 5-1 on the year, while FMU is also 5-1.
Catawba got single runs in the opening three innings to lead 3-0 in game one. Freshman Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) singled home a run in the second to give Catawba the lead. Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC), who scored the first run, singled home Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC) in the second and Marshall scored on an error in the third.
Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) kept Francis Marion off the board for six innings, but found trouble in the seventh. After an out, the Patriots next five batters reached base with Michaela Wolf (Littleton, CO) doubling home the tying run.
Neither team scored in the eighth, but Janine Allen (Lilburn, GA) delivered a RBI single with one-out in the ninth to plate the game-winner. Wolf picked up the win as she tossed a complete game allowing nine hits and three unearned runs with a dozen strikeouts. Ettinger fanned 10, but allowed four run on 11 hits.
Catawba battled back in game two to earn the split. Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) broke a 2-2 with an infield single in the fifth to score Whitesides. The duo had produced the first run in the opening frame when Whitesides led off with a double and scored on a groundout by White. Ryann Baker’s (Rockwell, NC) RBI single gave Catawba a 4-2 lead in the fifth.
Whitesides squeezed home Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) in the sixth for a 5-2 edge, but FMU rallied with two of its own in the sixth. Shannan Tyson (Seminole, FL) tripled home a run and Kat Beauvais (Manassas, VA) followed with a single to cut the margin to 5-4.
Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL) gave Catawba a much-needed insurance in the seventh as she hit a sacrifice fly to score Marshall, who led off with a double. The Patriots got a run back in their seventh on a two-out single by Tyson, but Whitesides and White combined to cut down Monica Wofford (Myrtle Beach, SC) at third to end the game.
Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA) moved to 3-0 on the year as she tossed six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Ettinger pitched the final inning to earn a save. Whitesides and Marshall each collected two hits in both games of the doubleheader for Catawba.
