Women's Basketball Wins Double-Overtime Thriller at Mars Hill
Hampton's buzzer-beater in overtime saves Lady Indians
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba College outlasted host Mars Hill and claimed a 92-86 win in double overtime in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Monday night at Stanford Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 18-6 overall and 8-4 in the SAC, while the Lady Lions fall to 14-10 and 7-6. Just two days after scoring its lowest total of the season (44 in a win over Newberry), Catawba tallies a season-high 92 points in Monday’s win.
Corin Muldrow (Jacksonville, NC) and Ne’Keithia Howard (Macon, GA) each scored four points in the second overtime and Gia Colombo (Concord, MH) made three free throws in the final 10 seconds to lift Catawba to the win. Muldrow finished with a career-high 23 points as she led four double-figure scorers for the Lady Indians.
Sophomore Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) forced the second extra session, banking home the lone Catawba three-pointer of the night at the first overtime buzzer to knot the game at 77-77. Hampton finished with 16 points. Mars Hill took an 81-79 lead in the second overtime, but Hampton tied the game on a pair of free throws and Muldrow followed with consecutive baskets to put Catawba on top for good.
Catawba had watched Mars Hill rally from an early five-point deficit in the first overtime to take a 75-70 lead with 39 seconds left. Hampton hit a layup and after two missed Mars Hill free throws, Colombo cut the deficit to 75-74 on a layup with 16 seconds remaining. Abby Debusk (New Tazewell, TN) made one of two free throws with 14 seconds to go and after a Catawba turnover, Lindsay Roberts (Murphy, NC) hit one of two from the stripe for a 77-74 edge with seven seconds remaining to set up Hampton’s tying three-pointer.
Roberts had put Mars Hill up 59-55 with a pair of free throws with 2:25 left in regulation, but Catawba rallied behind a three-point play by Brittany Higgins (Tacoma Park, MD) a basket by Muldrow and two more free throws by Higgins for a 62-61 edge with 32 seconds remaining. Ingrid Easter (Cana, VA) made one of two free throws with 13 seconds left and DeBusk sent the game to overtime on her basket with eight seconds left.
Catawba enjoyed a 16-7 lead midway through the first half, but Mars Hill rallied to go on top 24-18 and led 26-25 at the break. The Lady Indians went up by six at 39-33 early in the second half, but Mars Hill took the lead 48-47 on a jumper by Roberts with 8:07 left.
Higgins followed Muldrow and Hampton with 15 points for Catawba, while Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) also reached double digits with 11 points. DeBusk led all scorers with 24 points for Mars Hill. Jessica Blanford (Concord, NC) tallied 21 points with Roberts chipping in with 12.
