Men's Basketball Rolls Past Mars Hill in Second Half
MARS HILL, NC -- Senior Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) scored 11 points and dished out eight assists as Catawba rolled past host Mars Hill 83-64 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Monday night at Stanford Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 14-9 overall and 9-3 in the SAC, claiming its fifth straight win. The Lions fall to 8-15 and 4-9.
Mars Hill led by as many as seven in the opening half, the last at 28-21 with just under six minutes left. Catawba would end the half on a 16-3 run, capped by three-pointers from Ahmad Murphy (Orangeburg, SC) and Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC) which gave the Tribe a 37-31 edge at the break.
A basket by Norman Monroe (Newport News, VA) pushed the Catawba lead to double digits early in the second half and the Indians went up by 20 at 68-48 with 7:31 left on a layin by Graves. Catawba would grab its largest lead at 73-50 with 5:11 remaining.
Houston led Catawba with 15 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers. Following Graves’ 11 was Murphy with 10. Monroe had nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) also had nine points, while freshman Montrell Brinkley (Rocky Mount, NC) tallied eight points, pulled down eight rebounds and blocked two shots.
Mars Hill was led by Andy Miller (Franklin, NC), who scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 at the line. Stoney Polite (Morganton, NC) added 14 points, while Jamison McIver (Taylorsville, NC) tallied 11. Catawba shot 50% from the field for the game and committed just eight turnovers.
