Higgins Hits Last-Second Jumper to Give Women's Basketball a 74-72 Win Over LMU
Hampton sparks second half run, finishes with 18 points
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba sophomore Brittany Higgins (Tacoma Park, MD) hit a 15-foot jumper with one second remaining to lift the host Lady Indians to a 74-72 win over Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 19-6 overall and 9-4 in the SAC with their fourth straight win. The Lady Railsplitters fall to 12-13 and 4-10.
Higgins’ basket came after LMU’s Madeline Richards (Floyds Knob, IN) had tied the game on a three-pointer with eight seconds to go. Catawba pushed the ball up the court without using a timeout and Gia Colombo (Concord, NH) found Higgins for the game- winning shot.
Catawba led 72-65 after a layup by Ne'Keithia Howard (Macon, GA) with 2:01 to play. Richards and Heather Benton (Wooton, KY) hit jumpers to pull LMU within 72-69 and set up Richards’ tying shot. The Lady Indians trailed 32-26 at the break, but used a 14-6 to start the second half to grab a lead.
Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) led Catawba with 18 points. She hit consecutive three-pointers to cap the 14-6 run and five the Lady Indians a 40-36 lead. Howard followed with 10 points. Richards and Latoya Johnson (Miami, FL) each had 15 points for LMU, while Benton added 11 points.
Catawba shot just 39% in the first half, but canned 67% in the second half, including going 4-for-5 from behind the arc. LMU shot 59% in the second half and was 10-for-16 for three-point range for the game. Catawba held a 30-23 edge on the boards.
