Men's Basketball Tied for SAC Lead After Defeating LMU 89-67
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba pulled away midway through the second half and moved into a three-way tie for the league lead with a 89-67 win over visiting Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians pick up their sixth straight win and the seventh straight on Valentine’s Day in improving to 15-9 overall and 10-3 in the SAC. The Railsplitters fall to 11-13 and 5-9.
Lincoln Memorial led 44-39 with 15 minutes to play, but Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) tied the game with 13:03 left, starting a 10-0 run that gave Catawba a 53-45 lead with 11:14 remaining. The Indians kept building its lead until the final seconds, outscoring LMU 49-22 over the final 13 minutes.
Catawba enjoyed its first 10-0 run late in the opening half as the Tribe turned a 31-26 deficit into a 36-31 lead at the break. LMU used a 9-0 run early in the second half to get its 44-39 lead with 15 minutes left. Beau Brown (Athens, TN) started the run with a three-pointer, while Artavius Mitchell (Chicago, IL) added a pair of layups.
Freshman Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC) led Catawba with 21 points and hit all three of his three-pointers in the second half. Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) added 14 points, five assists and four steals. Mitchell led all scorers with 24 points for LMU. Brown added 17 points.
Catawba shot 53% in the win and hit on 65% in the second half. The Tribe also held a 41-30 edge on the boards led by Wooldridge, who had nine rebounds to go along with his 11 points.
