Ettinger, Whitesides Lead Softball to Sweep of Glenville State

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept a softball doubleheader from visiting Glenville State on Friday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 6-2 and 8-0 and improve to 7-1 overall.  The Lady Pioneers fall to 0-2.

Catawba got on the board in the second inning of the opener.  Sophomore Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) tripled home Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) for the early lead.  Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC) drove home a second run on a sacrifice fly.  Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) delivered a RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead after four innings.

Glenville State pulled within 3-2 in the fifth as Leanne Harris’ (Windsor, Ontario, CANADA) two-out infield single was followed by a two-run double by Meagan James (St. Albans, WV).  Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) provided the Lady Indians with some insurance runs in the sixth as she connected on a two-out, three-run homer for the final 6-2 margin.

Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) improved to 3-1 with her complete game effort.  She allowed the two runs on five hits with a pair of walk, but struck out 13 batters which was one shy of her school record.  Marshall and Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL) each had two hits for the Lady Indians.  Beth Moore (Nicholas, WV) had two hits for Glenville State.

Baker drew a bases-loaded walk to give Catawba a 1-0 lead after an inning of the second game.  Catawba scored three runs in both the second and third innings to take command.  In the second, Whitesides singled home a run and Marshall had a two-out, two-run double.  Whitesides hit a three-run homer in the third.  Marshall ended the game in the fifth with a squeeze bunt to score Whitesides.

Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA) tossed the five-inning shutout for Catawba to improve to 4-0.  She allowed two hits with a walk and a strikeout.  Whitesides went 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored.  White, Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC) and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) each had two hits.  Deidra Wallace (Milton, WV) and Jessica Gilchrest (Buffalo, WV) had the hits for the Lady Pioneers.
