Baker Hits Three Homers to Lead Softball to Sweep of Lees-McRae

Lady Indians off to best start in school history

SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) hit three home runs as host Catawba swept a softball doubleheader from Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 3-1 and 6-4.  Catawba continues its best start in school history, improving to 9-1.  The Lady Bobcats fall to 1-9.

In the opener, Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed a complete game, allowing a single run on five hits.  She had six strikeouts.  Catawba got on the board in the second on a solo homer by Baker.  Lees-McRae tied the game in the fourth on a leadoff home run by Dakota Beck (Hillsborough, NC).

Catawba retook the lead in fourth.  Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL).  The Lady Indians added a run in the sixth as pinch-hitter Kathleen Greenhalgh (Gresham, OR) drew a walk, which eventually led to Callie Gordy (Greensboro, NC) scoring on a wild pitch.

Lees-McRae loaded the bases in the seventh, but Ettinger got Salle’ Horner (Lexington, SC) to fly out to left to end the game.  Marshall was the only player to record two hits in the opener.

Catawba trailed 2-1 after two innings of game two then rallied for the sweep.  Baker connected on her second homer of the day, a three-run shot in the third to put the Lady Indians up 4-2.  Her leadoff homer in the fifth put Catawba on top 6-3.

Lees-McRae took a 2-1 lead after two innings.  The Lady Bobcats used an error and a RBI single by Jessica Kinsey (Hamlet, NC) to score twice in the second inning.  A double by Horner in the fourth trimmed the Catawba to lead to 4-3, but Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) answered with a RBI single for Catawba in its fourth.

Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA) improved to 5-0 with the win in game two.  She gave up 12 hits, but walked none and struck out four.  Baker had five RBI in game two, while Geouge and Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) joined Baker with two hits.  Horner had three hits for LMC in the nightcap, while Amanda Dodson (Walnut Cove, NC) and Paula Fryar (Clinton, NC) each had two hits.
