Baseball Drops Pair to Carson-Newman to Open League Play
Evans ties school mark with three homers in opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Carson-Newman rallied for a pair wins over 20th-ranked Catawba in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Eagles won by the scores of 9-7 and 5-3 to improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 6-6 and 0-2.
Catawba took a 7-4 lead after six innings of the opener after a record performance from Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC). The senior tied a Catawba record with three home runs and accounted for six RBI. Derek Long (Jefferson City, TN) capped a four-run third for the Eagles with a two-run single, but Evans erased the deficit with his second home run, a grand slam in the Tribe third.
Evans would hit his third homer in as many at bats in the sixth, but Carson-Newman put up its second four-run frame of the day in the seventh to take the lead for good. Brandon Burchfield (Maryville, TN) and Nick Achberger (Anderson, SC) each had RBI doubles to pull CN within 7-6 and Long tied the score with a sacrifice fly. Tyler Winn (LaGrange, GA) put the Eagles on top with a two-out, pinch-hit double to plate Achberger.
Each team pounded out 13 hits in the opener with Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) joining Evans with three hits for Catawba. Burchfield, Long, Jason Gray (Rutledge, TN) and Langdon Potts (Jefferson City, TN) had two hits for the Eagles. Logan Simmons (Signal Mountain, TN) earned the win in relief, while Mark Carroll (Morristown, TN) earned his third save with two scoreless innings of relief.
Catawba used a Carson-Newman error to plate a pair of runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) hit a sacrifice fly and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) singled home a run. The Tribe extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth as Matt Walker (East Lyme, CT) singled home Baker, who had led off with a double.
Carson-Newman got a run back in the fifth on a RBI groundout by Potts then took the lead in the sixth on a three-run, pinch-hit homer by Michael Brown (Chattanooga, TN). Cole Draughn (Science Hill, KY) earned the win for the Eagles. He tossed five innings, allowing five hits and with five strikeouts. Only one of the three runs allowed were earned against Draughn.
