Strong Pitching Leads Baseball to Win at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba got a two-run double from Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) and solid pitching in a 3-2 win over host Pfeiffer in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Ferebee Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 8-6, while the Falcons fall to 6-5.
Query opened the scoring in the third inning. Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) reached on a one-out error and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) singled before Query stepped in and laced a double into left center to score both runners. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) put the Tribe up 3-0 in the sixth as he doubled home Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC), who had singled and stolen second with one out.
Pfeiffer chipped away at the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) shut out the Falcons for five innings, working out of trouble in both the fourth and fifth innings. The lefty stranded runners at second and third with one out in the fourth and used a pickoff and a double play to erase a threat in the fifth.
Jodie Groce reached on an error to lead off the sixth for Pfeiffer and Bryan Braxton walked. Freshman Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL) relieved Link and allowed only a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyle Pugh. A two-out error in the sixth scored Shawn Coke, who led off the frame with a walk.
Cliff Poole (Greensboro, NC) and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings to keep Catawba in front. Evans struck out a pair of batters to earn his third save. Paul Link improved to 3-0 as he scattered four hits over his five-plus innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
Evans led a 12-hit attack by Catawba with three singles. Thomas, Sands, Query and Zeb Link all had two hits. Catawba left 10 runners on base, including six in scoring position. Chris Russell kept the Tribe from adding to the lead as he tossed three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just one hit with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.
