Softball Wins Wild Extra-Inning Game at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba defeated host Pfeiffer 8-7 in 10 innings in softball action on Friday afternoon at Ingram Field. The second game was halted after five innings due to darkness with Pfeiffer leading 6-1. The game will be concluded at a later date. With the win, the Catawba Indians improve to 12-3, while the Falcons fall to 5-6.
In the opener, each team picked up an early unearned run and the game was tied 1-1 after four innings. Pfeiffer would take the lead in the fifth with three more unearned runs. Jaimee Cassidy (Brandon, FL) singled home a run, while Stephanie Brandt (Cincinnati, OH) squeezed home the next run. Sarah Moore (Reidsville, NC) capped the inning with a RBI single.
Catawba rallied in the sixth on a three-run double by Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) which sent the game to a wild extra-inning finish. Catawba struck for three runs in the eighth. Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC) singled home the first run, while Whitesides and Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC) also had run-scoring singles.
Pfeiffer rallied right back. After an out, Jessica Culler (Rural Hall, NC) and Cristi Sink (Lexington, NC) had singles to cut the deficit to 7-5. The Falcons loaded the bases with two outs when Martina Bullard (Godwin, NC) singled to center to plate two runs. On the throw to home Bullard attempted to advance to second where she was called out for going out of the baseline to avoid a tag before the potential winning run would have scored from third.
In the Catawba ninth, Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) opened the inning at second and stole third. Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) appeared to have given the Lady Indians the lead with a sacrifice fly, but White was called out for leaving third to early. Pfeiffer was unable to score in its ninth.
Catawba would score the winning run in the tenth as Thornburg delivered the RBI on her fourth single of the game. One final bizarre play remained in the Pfeiffer tenth. Brandt started the inning at second and Moore laid down a sacrifice bunt. Marshall dropped the throw at first, but threw out Brandt attempting to score and Moore was erased as she tried to advance to second for a double play. Culler would bounce out to first to end the game.
Thornburg led Catawba at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. She also has two hits in the halted game. Whitesides picked up four RBI, while Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) scored two runs. Dacia Ijames (Kernersville, NC) had three hits for Pfeiffer, while Bullard and Cassidy each had two hits.
