Baseball victorious in opener

SALISBURY, NC — Catawba College opened its 2002 baseball season with a 4-2 win over Pfeiffer in action at the Dick Williams Good Guys Tournament on Saturday night at Newman Park. Pfeiffer fell to 0-3 with the loss. The game was tied until the top of the sixth when Spence Southard singled with one out and stole second. Blair Reynolds followed with a single to put Catawba on top 1-0. After an out and two walks, Brian Hatley delivered a two-run single to stretch the lead to 3-0. Pfeiffer would strike back in its sixth. Brad Cassady led off with a double and Mark Schleicher followed with a single. Jeff Robbins plated the first Falcon run on a sacrifice fly, while Schleicher would score on a wild pitch. Chris Abernathy relieved Tribe starter Jake Tally and got out of the sixth on a line drive double play to third. Tally allowed five hits, all singles through five innings. He got out of a possible jam in the fourth as Pfeiffer collected three straight hits, but Mike Robbins picked a runner off second with two on and one out. Chad Hill doubled home Southard in the Catawba seventh to pad the lead to 4-2. The Falcons got the tying run on base in the seventh, but Abernathy got Cassady on a fly out to left field to end the game. Southard, Hill and Israel Morrow all had two hits for Catawba, with both of Hill's hits being doubles. Talley earned the win, while Abernathy collected the save. Robbins was the only Falcon with two hits. ######
