Four Homers Power Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of WJU

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up a pair of wins over visiting Wheeling Jesuit in softball action on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Lady Indians swept the doubleheader, winning by the scores of 11-3 and 6-4.  Catawba improves to 14-3, while the Cardinals fall to 0-6.

Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) got the ladies rolling in the opening inning with a leadoff home run.  Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) added a two-run shot to give Catawba a 3-0 lead after an inning.  Catawba led 4-1 after three innings, but Wheeling Jesuit got back in the game on a two-run homer by Audrey Tucholski (Maumee, OH) in the fourth.

Catawba would answer the home run in its fourth inning, putting up seven runs.  The big hits came from Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) on a two-run triple and by Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) on a three-run homer.  Five Catawba players (Whitesides, Marshall, Geouge, Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC) and Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC)) collected two hits in the 13-hit attack.

In game two, Catawba went on top with a three-run second inning.  Baker belted a one-out double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL).  Whitesides plated the final two runs on a two-out double.

The Lady Indians moved ahead 6-1 in the fifth.  Marshall connected on her second home run of the day, while Thornburg doubled home a run.  The Cardinals crept back into the game in the seventh as Becca Nusbaum (Toledo, OH) hit a two-run homer and Shawna Clark (Everett, PA) singled home a run, but Rachel Christian (Buckingham, VA) got the final out on a grounder to second.

Christian tossed the complete game, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.  She improves to 6-1.  Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) improved to 8-2 by earning the win in the opener.  She allowed six hits and two earned runs in the five-inning victory.  The senior struck out six batters.
