Three Homers Power Softball Past #20 Shippensburg
SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) hit a pair of home runs to help Catawba knock off 20th-ranked Shippensburg 5-1 in the opening game of the 2007 Catawba Invitational Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 15-3, while the Raiders fall to 2-1. Tournament action will continue on Saturday and Sunday after most of Friday’s action was rescheduled.
The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth when Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) and Marshall opened the frame with back-to-back homers for a 2-0 lead. Catawba padded its lead in the fifth with the aid of a pair of errors. Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) had singled with one out and moved to second on a groundout. With White at the plate, Shippensburg would drop two foul balls on consecutive pitches before the junior drove home Whitesides with a single up the middle. Marshall followed with her second homer of the game for a 5-0 edge.
Shippensburg picked up its lone run in the sixth inning. Kelly Nelson (Warminster, PA) connected on a two-out home run. Nelson would touch the plate before the preceding runner, who was called out, negating a second run and ending the inning.
Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) improved to 9-2 as she scattered five hits in tossing the complete game. She allowed one run with no walks and four strikeouts. Whitesides, White and Marshall each had two hits for Catawba, while Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA) had two hits for the Raiders. Danielle Shields (Laurel, DE) struck out 12 in a losing effort. Only two of the five runs allowed were earned.
