Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Presbyterian
Tribe bangs out six homers in opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba connected on six homers in the opener and got a solid pitching performance from Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) in the second game as the Indians swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader from visiting Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba won by the scores of 16-8 and 5-1 as the Indians improve to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. The Blue Hose fall to 9-15 and 2-6.
Catawba jumped on Presbyterian in the opener, grabbing an 11-0 lead after two innings. Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) put the Tribe on top with a two-run homer in the first inning. Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC) capped a seven-run second for Catawba with his second grand slam of the season.
The Indians would hit three homers in the fifth inning, tying a school mark and giving the Tribe six on the day which also tied a school record. Catawba pounded out 21 hits in the opening game win with David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) and Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) each collecting four hits.
Presbyterian had 16 hits, five of which came in a six-run ninth. Casey Carlson (Lexington, SC) had three hits and three RBI for PC in the opener. The Blue Hose would leave 14 on base. Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) picked up the win for Catawba and improved to 3-2. He allowed just two runs on nine hits in seven innings.
Fairweather would keep the Blue Hose off the board until the sixth inning of the nightcap. Thomas was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first for Catawba, went to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a groundout by Sands. Thomas connected on a solo homer in the third to put Catawba up 2-0.
Criag Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) squeezed home Query in the fourth and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) doubled home a run in the fifth to stretch the advantage to 5-0. The Blue Hose opened the sixth with three straight hits, scoring on a single by Bobby Holmes (Quinton, VA).
The Blue Hose looked to reduce the margin further after Kyle Craven (Savannah, GA) drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Sands would turn in the key play for Catawba as he snared a line drive by Russell Robinson (Mt. Pleasant, SC) and threw out Robert Anders (Greenville, SC) at the plate. Cliff Poole (Greensboro, NC) got the Tribe out of the sixth and Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC) tossed a hitless seventh.
Fairweather improved to 3-1 as he allowed a run on five hits with four strikeouts. Daniel Hill (Matthews, NC) allowed just three hits in four and two-thirds innings for PC, but walked three and hit two batters. Baker collected two of Catawba’s five hits in the nightcap.
