Pitching Leads Baseball to Sweep of Presbyterian
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba completed the sweep of visiting Presbyterian with a 9-1 victory in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 12-8 overall and 5-4 in the SAC, while the Blue Hose fall to 9-16 and 2-7.
Sophomore Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC) kept the Blue Hose off balance for seven innings. He allowed a single unearned run on just two hits. Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) helped provide the offense, scoring three runs and collecting a pair of hits.
Each team picked up a run in the first inning. Presbyterian scored off a double steal as Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, NC) raced home as Casey Carlson (Lexington, SC) got in a run down between first and second. Catawba answered as David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC).
Ketner would stymie the Blue Hose, taking a no hitter into the fifth before a two-out single by Preston Simpson (Lancaster, SC). Catawba would take the lead in the sixth on a pinch-hit single by Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC) and erupted for five runs with two outs in the seventh. Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC) capped the inning with a two-run single.
Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) pitched two hitless innings of relief to secure the win. Sands, Baker, Hatley, Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) and Craig Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) each had two hits for the Tribe. Russell Robinson (Mt. Pleasant, SC) had the second PC hit.
