Baseball Grabs 10-Inning Win Over #12 USC-Aiken
Kepley's bases-loaded walk drives in winning run
AIKEN, SC – Junior Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC) drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning and Catawba knocked off 12th-ranked USC-Aiken 6-5 at Hernandez Stadium on Tuesday night. With the win, the Catawba Indians improve to 13-8, while the Pacers fall to 14-4.
In the 10th, Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) drew a leadoff walk, while Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) collected one out singles to load the bases. Kepley would coax a walk on a 3-2 pitch to drive in the go-ahead run. Evans tossed a perfect ninth to grab his fourth save, striking out a pair of batters.
It marked the fourth straight one-run game between the teams as Aiken swept last season three-game set. Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC) earned the win for the Tribe as he tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Evans collected three hits at the plate, while Baker and Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC) each had two.
Catawba took the early advantage, scoring single runs in the first two innings. Craig Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) reached on an error in the first and scored without the benefit of a hit. He advanced on a passed ball and a fly out before scoring on a wild pitch. Evans doubled with one out in the second and scored on a two-out single by Zeb Link.
Aiken would strike in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. After being no-hit by Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) over the first four innings, Chris Sheehan (Downers Grove, IL) led off with a single and Ken Raborn (Evans, GA) doubled. A single by Josh Euchues (Newberry, SC) scored the first run and Marc Joehnk’s (Lynnwood, WA) bunt single tied the game. The Pacers went on top on a sacrifice fly by Darryl Pui (Thornhill, Ontario, CANADA).
Sands tied the game in the Tribe sixth on a solo homer, but the Pacers used an unearned run to go back on top 4-3 after six innings. Lyerly put the Indians ahead in the seventh with a two-out, two-run single. Aiken pulled even with a run of its own in its seventh on a RBI infield single by Brad Johnson (Gilbert, SC).
