Baseball Drops Pair to Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate swept a doubleheader from host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday at Newman Park. The Bulldogs improve to 9-13 overall and 5-2 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 13-9 and 3-2. The Catawba Indians fall to 14-11 and 5-6.
Wingate connected on four home runs in a seven-run fifth innings to grab a 10-7 lead. Catawba would pull within 10-9 on a homer by Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC), but four Bulldog relievers, although tested, kept the Tribe off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Catawba’s Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC), Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) and Brett Hatley (Spencer, NC) hit back-to-back-to-back homer in the second inning to put the Indians on top 4-0. The Bulldogs pulled within 4-3 on Logan Beasley’s (Staney, NC) two-out, two-run double in the fourth.
David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) go the three-runs back for Catawba in the fourth with a home run, but the Wingate took the lead for good in the fifth. Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, NC) led off the frame with a homer and Blair Troutman (Concord, NC) gave Wingate the lead on a grand slam. Michael Parker (Snow Camp, NC) and Michael Taylor (Greenville, NC) also had solo shots in the inning.
After Query’s home run, Catawba hit into two double plays and had another runner thrown out at third. The Tribe loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Zak Laws (Lenoir, NC) struck out Evans to end the game. Beasley had four hits for Wingate in the opener, while Troutman and Taylor each collected three safeties.
The nightcap turned into a pitcher’s duel between Wingate’s Tyler Almond (Oakboro, NC) and Catawba’s Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC). Catawba would draw first blood in the fifth as Evans led off with a double and scored on a squeeze bunt by Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC).
The Bulldogs answered right back, scoring three runs in the sixth. Parker put Wingate on top with a two-run double, while Taylor doubled home the final run with two outs. Catawba got a run back in its sixth on a bases-loaded walk by Hatley, but left the bases juiced and also left a pair of runners on in the seventh.
Almond (1-1) allowed six hits and one earned run over five and a third innings. The Bulldog pen would toss an inning a third of hitless relief, but did walk four. Fairweather struck out seven in his five and a third innings. He allowed three runs on just four hits.
