Baseball Takes Final Game of Wingate Series
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up a 10-4 win over visiting Wingate in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 15-11 overall and 6-6 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 9-14 and 5-3.
David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) got the Indians on the board in the first inning with a two-out, two-run homer. The Tribe would use three Wingate errors in the second inning to score three times on go on top 5-1.
Catawba would score single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, two of those runs coming on homers from Lee Page (Dillon, SC) and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC)/
The Bulldogs made it interesting in the seventh. Josh Benton (Gold Hill, NC) brought Wingate within 8-4 with a two-run homer. The Bulldogs would load the bases with a pair of two-out singles and a walk, but Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL) struck out Michael Taylor (Greenville, NC) to end the frame.
The Tribe added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to build the lead to 10-4. Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC) earned the win for Catawba as he allowed two earned runs on six hits over six and a third innings of work. Michael Parker (Snow Camp, NC) had four hits for Wingate.
