Softball Roundup From the Snowbird Tournament

Ettinger and Christian combine for school's first no-hitter in 16 years

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- Catawba won four of five games at the Snowbird Tournament during last week.  Kathryn Geouge and Brittany Thornburg each hit .500 for the five games and drove in four runs apiece.  Four of Geouge’s seven hits were doubles.  On the mound, Rachel Christian posted a perfect 3-0 record and combined with Lindsay Ettinger for the school’s first no-hitter since April 10, 1991.

The ladies opened with a 7-2 win over Bellevue, NE.  Allie Marshall hit a pair of home runs and went back-to-back with Jacqueline White in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.  Jenn Mehl connected on a three-run homer in the sixth for the 7-2 lead.

Catawba would fall 5-4 in 10 innings to Roanoke, who is ranked 25th in NCAA III.  The Lady Indians rallied for two runs in the seventh to tie the score on a sacrifice fly by Ryann Baker.  Marshall tied the game in the eighth with another flyout, but Roanoke scored in the 10th and held Catawba to take the win.  Catawba had just five hits with Geouge and Thornburg collecting two each.

Christian tossed three no-hit innings in a 10-0 win over Concordia, MI.  Tiffany Farley allowed just one hit in two innings of relief.  Baker had three RBI as Catawba grabbed a 4-0 lead after an inning.

The no-hitter came on Thursday’s action against Widener, PA.  Ettinger walked just one batter with six strikeouts in six innings of work, while Christian was perfect in finishing up the 8-0 win.  Mehl homered in the first to stake the ladies to a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Indians rolled to a 12-1 win over Juniata, PA, in the final game of the tournament.  Christian allowed just four hits over five innings to grab her third win.  Catawba scored seven runs in the second innings to take control early.  The ladies pounded out 11 hits, including two each by White, Callie Gordy, Kristyn Funderburke.
