Softball sweeps opening doubleheader

SALISBURY, NC ó Catawba College opened its 2002 softball season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mount Olive on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians rallied for a 6-3 win in the opener, then took a 3-2 decision in game two. Catawba improves to 2-0, while the Lady Trojans fall to 2-2.Mount Olive jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings in the opener. Brettany Albertson (Beulaville, NC) doubled and scored in the first, then doubled home a run in the second. Jennifer Domino (Los Angeles, CA) had three hits and an RBI. Lady Indian starter, Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) settled down after the second inning and kept Mount Olive off the board allowing the Catawba rally. The Lady Indians tied the game in the fourth. Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) led off with a double and after a wild pitch, a walk and a stolen base, Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL) plated both with a single off the glove of Sommer Barrow (Dudley, NC) at third. Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) tied the score with a two-out single to center. Catawba added three more runs in the fifth to take the lead. Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) walked to start the frame and Myers followed with a single. An error loaded the bases for Liz Corbett (Severn, MD), who walked to plate the go-ahead run. Jen Ropp (Broadway, VA) followed with a sacrifice fly and Cari Griffin (Olney, MD) drove home the last run on a single to left. Freshman Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) tossed five innings of no-hit ball to help Catawba to the sweep. The Lady Indians manufactured a run in the first as McDowell led off with a single and Rivera and Carson followed with sacrifice bunts. Myers delivered the run-scoring single with two outs. Catawba added two more in the fourth as Rivera singled and moved to second on an error, then scored on Carsonís double. Carson would later score on a double steal. The Lady Trojans finally got a hit off Wilson to lead off the sixth and would add three more after a strike out to score their first run. Domino got Mount Olive within a run on a ground out, but Wilson retired Ann Bolton (Griswold, IA) on a fly out to end the threat. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) struck out three of four batter in the seventh to earn the save for the Lady Indians. McDowell collected two hits in each game for Catawba, while Myers and Rivera had three hits total. #######
