Baseball Cruises to Win Over King College
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba used a five-run first and a six-run third to defeat visiting King 11-1 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 16-11 overall, while the Tornado fall to 10-7.
Matt Morris (Sweetwater, TN) put King on top in the opening half inning, driving home Joe Craven (Franklin, TN) with a single to right. Catawba answered right back, scoring five times after two were out in its first. Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) and Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) hit back-to-back homers, while Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) added a two-run shot. Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC) doubled home the final run.
Catawba would stretch its lead in the third. Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) led off with a home run and Query capped the outburst with a two-run double. Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) got the win, allowing just four hits over his four innings. The Tornado threatened in the fifth, but left the bases loaded.
Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL) tossed two innings of hitless relief and Cliff Poole (Greensboro, NC) closed out the contest with a scoreless ninth. Sands, Query, Baker, Evans and Link each had two hits for Catawba as did Brian Sommer (New Port Richey, FL). Bryan Cruze (Jefferson City, TN) had two hits for King.
