Softball Sweeps Fairmont State; Ties Win Mark for Season
White wins game two with triple in seventh
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba softball team tied the school record for wins in a season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Fairmont State on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 8-0 and 8-7. The wins improve Catawba to 28-9 on the season, while the Lady Falcons fall to 7-8.
Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) tripled home Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC) from first with one out in the seventh inning to give Catawba the dramatic win in the nightcap. Gordy had drawn a walk on a 3-2 pitch before White lined the first pitch into the rightfield corner.
Catawba took a 5-2 lead in the second game, scoring five times in the second inning. Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) put the ladies on top with a three-run homer. Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC) doubled home a run, while Gordy had a RBI single.
Fairmont State cut the deficit to 5-4 in the third on a two-run homer by Whitnie Highland (Scott Depot, WV) and took back the lead in the fourth on Highland’s RBI single and a run-scoring groundout by Julie Bolyard (Grafton, WV).
Catawba tied the game in the fifth without a hit as Baker drew a walk, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on a passed ball. Baker put Catawba on top with a solo homer in the sixth, but the Lady Falcons got a two-out single by Mary McComick (Cumberland, MD) to tie the game in the seventh.
In the opener, Catawba got singles by Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) and Gordy in the opening inning and scored on a pair of Falcon errors. Geouge singled home a run in the third, while White capped the three-run frame with a two-run double.
Catawba would end the game in the sixth. Whitesides scored on a wild pitch and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC) hit a two-run homer. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed her second straight shutout. She allowed four hits and struck out to in improving to 14-4 on the season.
Gordy and Whitesides collected a pair of singles for Catawba, while Sara VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL) had two doubles. Highland (Scott Depot, WV) had a pair of hits for Fairmont State in the opener and three in the nightcap.
