Baseball Takes Series Finale 4-3 Over #23 Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba grabbed a 4-1 lead after three innings and held off visiting Lenoir-Rhyne, taking a 4-3 win over the 23rd-ranked Bears in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 18-12 overall and 8-7 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 25-7 and 7-4.
Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) collected the first of his three hits in the opening inning, driving in Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) with a two-out single to put the Indians on top 2-0. Mark Drucker (Boca Raton, FL) put the Bears on the board in the second as he singled in Evan Taylor (Charlotte, NC) with an unearned run.
Catawba added to its lead in the third as Sands and David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) hit back-to-back homers. Derek Pugh (Asheboro, NC) singled home Taylor in the fourth and Dallas Tarleton (Monroe, NC) homered in the sixth as Lenoir-Rhyne drew within 4-3, but Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) and Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) kept the Bears off the board the rest of the way.
Smith, now 6-3, tossed seven innings, scattering five hits with five strikeouts. Link worked the final two innings for his first save. He allowed two hits and struck out two. Evans had the only multi-hit game for the Tribe with his three hits, while Tarleton had two hits for the Bears. Chris Henderson (Lincolnton, NC) tossed two and two-thirds innings of hitless relief for Lenoir-Rhyne.
