Baseball Downs Limestone 9-3

Sommer enjoys four-hit afternoon

SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Brian Sommer (New Port Richey, FL) collected four of Catawba’s 20 hits as the Indians defeated visiting Limestone 9-3 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians, who had 26 hits in Tuesday’s win at St. Andrews, improve to 20-12.  The Saints fall to 17-18.

Limestone jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, collecting seven of its nine hits in the early frames.  The first three Saint batters of the game singled with Joey Asis (Gastonia, NC) driving in Zachery Watkins (Albany, GA) for the first run.  Dylan Anthony (Lincolnton, NC) hit a two-run homer in the second for the 3-0 edge.

Catawba picked up two runs in the third with two outs on a RBI double by David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) and a run-scoring single by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC).  Sands put the Tribe on top with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Asis had led off the Limestone fifth with a double, but that would be the last baserunner of the game for the Saints.  Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) retired the final three outs of the inning and tossed a perfect sixth before giving way to the bull pen.  Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC) and Cliff Poole (Greensboro, NC) kept Limestone silent for the final three innings.

While the Tribe pitching was shutting down Limestone, the Indian bats got hot.  Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) had a two-run single in the sixth to push the lead to 6-3 and Catawba put up three more runs in the seventh.  Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) led off with a home run with Craig Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) adding RBI singles.

Query, Thomas and Evans each had three hits for Catawba.  Watkins, Asis and Daniel Lydon (White Plains, MD) had two hits for Limestone.  Link improved to 4-0 with his six innings of work.  He allowed nine hits, but walked none and struck out three.  Jeremy Riggs (Suffolk, VA) suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 2-1.
